How cross-training employees can benefit the company?
There is a broad source of information about management styles, and how they can learn to communicate with their staff. There is very minimal mention of cross training in most of the books and the Internet sites we (our team) have researched. Cross training topic is mentioned mostly as a general topic with the management and employee communication and motivation subjects.
What we have come up with is a comprehensive program that solely focuses on cross training and its implementations. These programs will specifically target departmental and intra departmental employees of the each company. This program is collaboration between the top management and the human resources department. The cross training program will set step by step guidelines to be followed by each department. Each department will have a number of set goals that are set by their management and the human resources. The following steps will help the company have a better understanding of the program and its implementation.
1. Top managers from each department should have a departmental meeting to seek out their staff’s problems, concerns and key points that need to be focused on.
2. Managers need to find out about the job function of each employee within each department.
3. Each employee needs to outline in detail their daily job functions so the managers have a better understanding of their jobs.
4. Managers should get with the human resources department and come up with set of specific guidelines for each department accordingly.
5. Each employee within the department should have a set number of goal to be met by certain date (employees concerns have been taken into consideration).
A cross training program should be adopted by companies that want to see efficiency and growth in employee input. Carefully planned cross training programs, will help the company achieve its objectives. When cross training is an integral part of the company’s management and human resources philosophy, it has the added benefits of enhancing performance, not only for employees, but also benefits management and the company overall. Companies can adopt cross training programs in departmental and intradepartmental levels. Once the program is adopted and implemented, the company will see the overall effect on employees, managers and the company.
Implementing and maintaining cross training programs should be a goal of each company as new projects are presented. For instance, the human resource department can have a quarterly status-check of the program to make sure that the program is put into practice as planned. The managers should have monthly meetings with their department staff to make sure they are following the program. The cross training program can take many forms, enhancing the employees feeling of safety, security and so that the employees can perform duties not specific to their own job function, with little shortfall.
Making a commitment to implement cross training programs, a strategy that encourages employees to acquire new knowledge and skills beyond their normal job duties, enables companies to meet more objectives with less employees. The human resource department or management team can execute cross training by selecting the best candidates from each area of the departments. Then they can create teams that are lead by these individuals.
Employees can be cross-trained in many different methods. Employees can have shift rotations on weekly basis so they can have better understanding of their co-workers daily job functions. Another way to go about cross training, would be to take a week of intensive training, where one person watches and notes the actions of the area he or she is being cross trained in, which would lead to complete training over the area of study and lead to many benefits to the employee, management and the company as a whole.
As the training progresses through time, companies should push to make cross-training their policy. Each new employee who arrives at the company will be cross-trained on all areas of the department. Over time the company will see the results such as flexibility, lower labor expenses, increase job stability, spurring job interest among employees, and opens the door to more effective and open communication in the entire company.
