Financial Functions for Excel

1) To calculate the rate of a four year $8,000 loan with monthly payments of $200

0.77%

RATE (48 - 200,8000) (nper = 48, pmt - 200, pv = 8000, fv = 0, type = 0,)

2) To calculate the payment for a loan on constant payments and a constant interest rate

a) Monthly payment on a $10,000 loan at an annual interest rate of 8%, paid off in 10 months

($1,037.03)

PMT (0.08/12, 10, 10000)

PMT (rate = 8%, nper = 10 mo , pv = 10000 , fv = 0 , type = 0)

b) Same loan if payments are due at the beginning of the period, the payment is

($1,030.16)

PMT (0.08/12,10,10000,0,1)

PMT (rate = 8% , nper = 10mo, pv = 10000, fv =0, type = 1)

c) You loan someone $5,000 at 12% interest for 5 months.  Their monthly payments are

$1030.20

PMT (0.12/12,5,-5000)

PMT (rate = 12%, nper=5mo, pv=5000, fv=0, type=0)

d)  You want to save $50,000 in 18 years.  Assume a 6% annual interest rate, how much would you have to put away each month

($129.08)

PMT (0.06/12, 18*12, 0, 50000)

PMT (rate = 6%, nper = 216mo, pv = 0, fv = 50000, type = 0)

The financial function FV returns the value of an investment based on periodic, constant payments and a constant interest rate –cash out is negative, cash in is positive

You deposit $1000 in a savings account earning 6% annual interest compounded monthly.  You plan to deposit $100 at the beginning of each month for the next 12 months.  How much money will you have at the end of 12 months?

$2301.40

FV (0.06 / 12, 12, -100, -1000, 1)

FV ( rate = 6%, nper = 12, pmt = -100, pv = -1000, type = 1)

Where: Rate = 6% / 12; # of months = 12 ; monthly payments = $100; initial deposit = $1000, Type = 1 meaning that payments are made at the beginning of each month

A proposal: An Extra TV for soccer

Phoenix and surrounding cities sports bars and restaurants must add an additional TV specifically designated for soccer.

Reasons (just a few):

  1. Soccer is one of the fastest growing sports in America.
  2. According to Brooking Institute, Hispanic population in Phoenix has increased from 34 to 41.8 percent in five years –and growing.
  3. Arizona has 35,000 Hispanic-owned businesses.
  4. Hispanic population in the state of Arizona has $26 billion in buying power.
  5. In Arizona, 28% of the population is of Hispanic or Latino origin (2004).

Just by looking at the above few reasons, and there are many, you can tell the potential of attracting more consumers to bars and restaurants. Soccer is the most watched, most played and most loved game in the world. US is lagging behind in terms of fan base and love, but there is hope and it is real hope. The soccer fan base in Phoenix and Valley metro area is strong and growing.

Bars need to realize this and start catering to their clients needs. Every bar has TVs for baseball, football and basketball –why not soccer. This is the place to have it. This is the city to begin with. Soccer fans are known to be dedicated fans. In the future, bars that cater to this fan base will succeed because these very same fans will be dedicated customers to those bars/restaurants.

Better yet, start a Soccer Bar.

The baseball stat

So a buddy and I are chillin’, drinking and watching the BOS v CLE game. Baseball is always fun -whether you are in the game or watching it on TV with friends (alcohol a must).

We were watching the pitcher throwing fast balls and the corner of the screen would lit-up with how fast he just shot that ball. Yes, shot that ball -I saw 99 mph. That is speed my brothers. So we started talking about how fast these guys can shoot the ball and how much they strive to keep on with the stat and of course to break and make their own records.

In the process, we came up with a stat that the MLB is lacking and/or has not started adding to the pitchers’ record books: it is the RPM of the ball. MLB has records of how fast the pitchers have been shooting the ball for years and years, but no one has ever recorded the RPM of each pitch. I am sure we have the technology to do it.

Notice to MLB: Start recording the pitchers’ RPMs. It is a no-brainer and it will add extra competitiveness to the game as the pitchers will strive to making and breaking each-others records in many years to come.
